This just in: with the revelation that Greatest American Dog (8 p.m. on CBS, E!) — which sees a dozen canines and their obnoxious owners playing musical doggie chairs and riding skateboards for a $250,000 cash prize — ranked as the sixth most popular show on prime time last week, American culture has bottomed out once again. SNAP JUDGEMENT: CBS’ “GREATEST AMERICAN DOG”
Entertainment Weekly, Popwatch: Blog

-Mandy Bierly
July 11, 2008

This week, working in groups of four (or eight), the owners had to come up with a skit that would showcase their dogs’ basic skills (e.g. sit, play dead, pirouette, skateboard). Some rose to the challenge — like film producer Laura and her mohawk-rockin’ Pomeranian, Preston, from Team Aloha, which did an Hawaiian theme.

***

As for my early favorites, I’d say they are Preston and Tillman. (Tillman won me over when he refused to keep playing musical chairs; Preston’s owner, Laura, got me when she brought David and his beloved Parson Russell Terrier, Elvis, some blankets in the Dog House.)

THE GREATEST AMERICAN DOG IS TOPS
Reality TV Magazine

The premiere of Greatest American Dog  was a bigger hit than even CBS hoped it would be.  Not only did humans love it, but their masters….errrr pets….seemed to love it too.

The premiere on Thursday night did something that very few shows do, it won its’ time slot blowing away the competition on all the other networks.

Because of the success it saw CBS has decided to rebroadcast the premiere episode on Saturday, July 12th, so that everyone who may have missed it (like myself) and want to see it can catch it before the next great episode airs next Thursday, July 17.

ONLY THE UNDERDOG CAN KEEP THIS FURRY REALITY AFLOAT
Columbia Spectator: Online Edition

Dear CBS: please don’t vote Tillman off the island. The skateboarding English Bulldog is practically the only thing that’ll salvage ratings for Greatest American Dog. Your latest reality show gimmick is like any other—bring a dozen strangers together and let them duke it out for the 250k. The difference here is that you’ve allowed the members of this drama-laden cast to bring their best friends, and being of the canine variety, these loveable pooches are hailed as the stars of the show.

But really, CBS, Tillman should get top dog billing. Your cameras love him, and I know I’m not the only one who couldn’t resist his laborious efforts to get onto the block during doggie musical chairs. Sure, some of the other contestants are OK—in fact, I’ve taken a particular liking to Laura and Preston, her purebred Pomeranian who understands over 100 words and phrases. And Star, a purebred Brittany, is also endearing. He’s helped owner Bill deal with his wife’s diabetes, and the senior and his playful pup seem to be having a genuinely good time on the show. But the rest of them—they’re just in it for their own 15 minutes of fame much like any other blue-blooded reality show contestant.

PREMIERE OF “GREATEST AMERICAN DOG” CHEWS THROUGH COMPETITION AMONG CANINES 1.79-7 YEARS OLD (18-49 IN DOG YEARS)

CBS Research Estimates It’s the Most Watched Telecast by Dogs Since “Lassie” In 1974

“Greatest American Dog” Marks Its Territory Over ABC’s “Ugly Betty” in Key Upscale Purebreds

The premiere of CBS’s GREATEST AMERICAN DOG, a reality series that pits 12 teams of dogs and owners in a competition that tests owners’ skills in handling dogs, won its time period among dogs 1.79-7 years old (18-49 in dog years) and delivered the highest prime time audience among canines since Lassie in 1974, according to the CBS data that hasn’t been chewed apart or eaten.

Airing against ABC’s catfight comedy “Ugly Betty,” GREATEST AMERICAN DOG premiered in first place in dog-patrolled households, canine viewers, upscale purebreds, “Heinz 57″ (mutt) adults and the advertiser coveted 1.79-7 years olds.

GREATEST AMERICAN DOG captured cross-breed success, with particularly strength among golden retrievers, beagles, terriers, female poodles ages 3.6-7.7 years old (25-54 in dog years) and the elusive young, male pit bull audience. In contrast, time period competitor “Ugly Betty” captured Siamese cats and tiara-wearing Chihuahuas in the same timeslot. Against NBC’s “Last Comic Standing,” GREATEST AMERICAN DOG won the entire mammal viewing audience, including dogs, cats, ferrets, skunks and rodents.

GREATEST AMERICAN DOG also dominated the upscale canine audience, placing first with English bulldogs, Akitas, Cavalier King Charles spaniels and Norfolk Terriers

Impressively, GREATEST AMERICAN DOG improved on last year’s “Ultimate Frisbee Competition” by +71%.

“Our testing audience with schnauzers in Vegas suggested a high opening number, but this exceeds our wildest expectation,” said CBS Research Chief David Poltrack when he saw the preliminary numbers. Poltrack said the number should go even higher in Live Plus 7, factoring in dogs who know how to use their paws to program their DVRs.

Viewers who missed last night’s GREATEST AMERICAN DOG premiere can circle the computer three times, sit down and watch the full episode on cbs.com and across the CBS Audience Network.

GREATEST AMERICAN DOG was also quite popular among humans. The show premiered with a time period win in households (6.1/12), viewers (9.46m), adults 25-54 (2.7/09) and adults 18-49 (2.1/08).

Updated Thursday ratings will be available this afternoon. Data on endangered species viewing has been postponed.

canine reality show unleashes creativity - trendhunter.com

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Greatest American Dog is a new TV show that debuts tonight, that puts 12 teams of dog trainers against each other for a chance to win $25,000. CBS has been busy promoting the show with help from ad agency Initiative, putting out unique campaigns on the streets, in traditional media and online. A great example is the above video which plays with the old saying that dogs look like their owners.

Other parts of the show promo included branded hot dog stands, which let them have fun with plays on words, in Manhattan. They also sent out dog walkers and dogs in New York, both wearing man and canine wearing vests branded with the show’s logos. In addition, they also teamed up with “the Facebook for dogs,” Dogster.com.

“In pet-food sections of certain supermarkets, motion-sensor video screens have been set up to run a 30-second spot,” AdWeek explains. “The monitor snaps to life with the sound of a barking dog when shoppers gets close, inviting them to press a button to view the program.”

Just when you thought TV producers were running out of ideas for reality shows, they unleash a show starring dogs!

“Twelve dogs and their owners arrive at Canine Academy with a common goal in mind: to win the title of Greatest American Dog,” CBS explains. “Ron, a self-proclaimed beach bum and his skateboarding dog Tillman, make a strong impression on the houseguests in more ways than imagined. In an elaborate canine talent show, the dog/owner teams work hard to impress the judges, but one pup must be sent packing!”

Bark my words, I like dogs, but I don’t think I could sit through 10 minutes of this show.

Laura is totally my favorite so far - Zap2it.com

Sunday, July 13th, 2008

-Liz Pardue, Zap2it.com

“Brace yourselves, because what I’m about to say might come as a bit of a shock: Greatest American Dog is, without a doubt, the greatest reality show of all time.

Laura and her hot pink mohawk-wearing Pomeranian Preston. Okay, I know that sounds awful, but it’s seriously incredible cute and awesome. Trust me. Oh, and incidentally, Laura is totally my favorite so far.

Laura, continuing her streak of not sucking, organizes extra food and blankets for him (David), plus his luggage.

Finally, Laura has Preston play around with a beach ball and give her a high five. It’s super cute, and the judges like how she interacts with Preston. Yay, Laura!”
