This just in: with the revelation that Greatest American Dog (8 p.m. on CBS, E!) — which sees a dozen canines and their obnoxious owners playing musical doggie chairs and riding skateboards for a $250,000 cash prize — ranked as the sixth most popular show on prime time last week, American culture has bottomed out once again.
As if Watergate, Pearl Harbor and 9/11 weren’t embarrassing enough, now the nation of freedom and opportunity must bear the stigma of a reality TV-addicted populace who get their kicks watching yipping canines jump through hoops and roll over on demand.
“Greatness takes all shapes and sizes,” intones the portentous narrator as images of the Grand Canyon, moon landing and president Harry Truman introduce this Survivor-meets-Lassie reality contest.
“From natural wonders to man-made marvels, from explorers who paved the way to our nation’s greatest heroes. But philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson said it best: ‘to be great is to be misunderstood.”‘
And no one is more misunderstood than the humans behind these four-legged revolutionaries who would do anything — except, perhaps, obey their masters — for a doggie treat.
